An Introduction to Piracy
With the internet growing in popularity, piracy has become an everyday
occurrence. The average Internet user can easily obtain copyrighted
materials within minutes. There has always been piracy on the Internet
from the beginning, but as the users grew, so did the rate of file
sharing. The digital distribution boom started in May of 1999 when a
peer-to-peer program named Napster was released (CNN 2001). Napster had
a short run before ordered by a court to cease it from aiding users to
obtain copyrighted music files. The peer-to-peer concept did not die
with Napster. The same methods were incorporated into other types of
programs. Now the newest wave of peer-to-peer file sharing programs make
downloading files easier and safer than before.
